In a groundbreaking (and somewhat perplexing) announcement, Telltale Games revealed their next big project will be set in the Fifty Shades of Grey universe. And if you thought the movies pushed the boundaries of explicit content, well, buckle up, because Telltale’s version is said to be even more "adult" than Christian Grey's darkest secrets.
In a statement that has left the gaming community equally baffled and intrigued, Telltale’s CEO, Kevin Whispers (no relation to Christian Grey), explained: “We’ve always been known for our emotional storytelling and complex character development. But with Fifty Shades, we’re going to take that to a whole new level. Prepare for an interactive experience that explores not just the emotional dynamics of BDSM and butthole pleasures, but also, well, the very physical dynamics.”
Sources inside Telltale, who spoke on the condition of anonymity (and probably a hefty NDA), claimed that players will have the opportunity to engage in an unprecedented level of intimacy with the characters, including fully immersive quick-time events where you must “carefully navigate the fine art of safe words” and “tailor your decisions to avoid stepping on any emotional landmines.” According to one insider, “It’s like The Walking Dead, but instead of zombies, you’re fighting off cumming too fast and trying to avoid using the wrong terminology in the bedroom.”
The game, which will be released in an exclusive partnership with a well-known adult retailer, is expected to feature a variety of new mechanics, including a “pleasure and pain” slider (for character development, of course) and a “consent meter” that tracks how well you’ve been listening to your partner’s needs. Reports suggest that Christian Grey will be voiced by none other than Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, while Anastasia Steele’s voice will be provided by Tomb Raider’s Camilla Luddington. The casting calls for both roles reportedly included a “heightened focus on sensual delivery” and the need to “perfect the art of whispering sweet nothings while simultaneously issuing emotional ultimatums.”
Telltale has yet to release a trailer, but the studio’s official website promises that fans will “experience a thrilling, edging-on-the-edge-of-your-seat narrative, full of twists, turns, and plenty of ‘chafing.’” For now, fans of both the Fifty Shades franchise and Telltale’s unique narrative-driven approach will have to wait patiently for what could be the most controversial game of the year, if not the decade.
