In a move that shocked no one, the developer behind Concord is being shut down almost immediately after the game’s release. It turns out all those glowing pre-release impressions and positive press coverage did absolutely nothing to convince people to buy yet another soulless online FPS. Shocking, right?
But here's the good news! Sony has truly listened to what their fans REALLY want, and they’ve announced they’ve figured out the root cause of Concord's failure: a poor CGI trailer budget. A spokesperson from Sony made it crystal clear just days before the game’s release that “Everyone knows the most important part of your game is the reveal CGI trailer. Some people think the trailer should gracefully represent what the actual gameplay will be, but we really know it’s about how many wacky, zany characters you can stuff in there. I have a business degree so I should know what these nerds really want.” They ended the statement by muttering “wubalubadubdub,” which left everyone in the room with a bad taste in their mouths — and no, it wasn’t just the cringe from that reference.
We reached out to the same spokesperson today for further comment. Here’s what they had to say: “I don’t get it. Star Wars: KOTOR drops a CGI trailer that has nothing to do with the game, and everyone creams in their pants, but when we do it, we have to explain a $400 million investment loss to our shareholders? It's terrible, but we've learned the right lesson. We're taking all the funding from our single-player games and re-investing it into our online-only games CGI trailer budgets to make sure this never happens again. After all, who needs gameplay when you’ve got explosions, quips, and zany characters?”
The cancellation hit Sony particularly hard, as they’d been planning to create an entire Concord Universe (CU) to rival the MCU — featuring twice as many quips per character. They also had a diverse range of spinoffs in the works, including The Concord Cookbook and The Concord Encyclopedia. But alas, all of these have been cancelled — except for the single episode of Amazon’s new show, Secret Level. Watching it will definitely be an awkward experience that is sure to age like milk as time goes on and everyone forgets that this ever existed.
