It’s no secret that people in Japan work incredibly hard. So hard, in fact, that we North Americans turn it into memes while we should probably be working ourselves. However, it seems some of that hard work might be a little... overhyped.
Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Smash Bros. series, often talks about the sleepless nights he’s endured to make his games the way they are. But those ideals of hard work and dedication came crashing down recently when Sakurai reportedly made a huge fuss over having to make over six phone calls just to get Metal Gear’s Solid Snake into Smash Bros..
Were the phone calls really long? Does Sakurai really measure effort in phone calls? Couldn’t he have just sent an email? We may never know. This offhand comment has left fans scratching their heads about just how much work actually goes into Smash Bros..
In a recent discovery, fans found that the game actually reuses several characters and maps from previous titles, leading some to suggest that perhaps Sakurai's dedication is, um, not as intense as we thought.
Sakurai has essentially been working on the same game for over 20 years, and we’re pretty sure that when he was last on camera, he blinked in Morse code for "S.O.S." But hey, it’s not our job to dive into conspiracy theories. We just want amazing games with higher and higher quality, no matter how many phone calls it takes to get there. Developers can be so selfish sometimes.
