Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator and director of the Dark Souls series, gave a telling interview where he shared some interesting insights into the success he’s seen. He also offered some incredibly sound wisdom to any developers who may be struggling, as he once did. “Git Gud lol,” Miyazaki told us on Tuesday, November 5th.
It seems that a trademark piece of advice often shared within his player base is just as useful outside of his games as well. The interview, which was incredibly brief as he had very little to say, quickly devolved into a joke for Miyazaki. When asked if he had any other pieces of advice that might be a little more descriptive for aspiring developers, he only had this to say: “Try finger, but whole.”
Miyazaki spent much of the interview laughing at his own answers, as if we were the stupid ones for asking him in the first place. Perhaps he is trying to emulate what it’s like for gamers to play his games and go looking for advice within the community?
Clearly, a man who knows what he’s doing, it’s hard to say whether his advice should be ignored, even if it’s delivered in a way that hurts our feelings. Perhaps Miyazaki is trying to say that everyone can achieve greatness through struggle, disappointment, and unyielding determination—the very same way you achieve greatness in his games. Which would be incredibly profound and, quite frankly, genius.
Considering Miyazaki reeked of marijuana,it’s equally possible he was just having a laugh at the expense of those still climbing the ladder of success. Once again, drawing a parallel to those gamers who have managed to finish his difficult games, giving them a sense of entitlement and empowerment over those who can’t. Brilliant.
After an hour and a half of passing a blunt around and quoting Family Guy with Miyazaki, we ended the interview. We are still unsure what Miyazaki meant by all this, but we think it was his form of encouragement? We feel incredibly sorry for his kids though, who must be getting told to “Git Gud” on a daily basis.
