In a shocking admission, Hollow Knight: Silksong director, Arius Shale, revealed in a candid interview that he has not yet begun working on the much-anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight. Instead, he’s been focusing all of his energy on a far more pressing matter: beating the original Battletoads.
“Look, it’s not that I don’t want to work on Silksong—it’s just that Battletoads has been calling my name,” Shale confessed while nervously fidgeting with a game controller. “I mean, how am I supposed to create an intricate, expansive world when I’m stuck on the Turbo Tunnel for the 87th time? The game’s broken. It’s so punishing, it’s basically a psychological horror experience in itself.”
The revelation came during a live-streamed Q&A session at Lowes Hardware for fans eagerly awaiting news on Silksong, a game that has been in development since the release of Hollow Knight in 2017. Fans were already getting restless, with many wondering if the game would ever see the light of day. But, as it turns out, Shale’s current focus is much more singular: mastering the 8-bit chaos that is Battletoads.
"I know I said ‘We’ll be back soon’ and 'Coming in 2023,’ but those were just the words of a man who couldn’t get past the damn speeder bike section,” Shale continued, wiping his brow. “I swear, at this point, Battletoads is my true nemesis. The sequel can wait—I’ll finish it when I finish Battletoads. Besides, you guys like Hollow Knight... is there really a reason for me to make another one already?”
Game industry insiders are reportedly baffled by Shale’s admissions, questioning how the director’s obsession with a 30-year-old platformer could possibly affect the development timeline of one of the most anticipated indie games of the decade. “This is what happens when a man has everything. He made a ton of money off the first one and what does a man do once he finally has money and power? He rights the wrongs of the past. He is doing this for his 8 year old self who wasted his whole weekend doing the same thing. I only feel pity for the man.”
Despite the controversy, Shale insists that he’s “totally got this under control” and promises that Silksong will be finished once he’s conquered the Battletoads challenges. “I mean, it’s all about perseverance, right?” he said, his voice cracking slightly. “I beat Hollow Knight a few times, so I know I can do this. I don’t need save states, I don’t need guides, just me alone in a room with that stellar pause music baby. I’ll get to Silksong once I beat Battletoads—mark my words. I just need time.”
In the meantime, fans can only hope Shale’s resolve holds strong, and that one day—preferably before 2028—Silksong will finally arrive. Until then, the Battletoads world remains Shale’s personal Everest, a mountain he must climb before he can finish his magnum opus. “I’m not giving up until I finish that damn Turbo Tunnel. And then? Then Silksong will come. I promise.”
