Geoff Keighley, organizer and host of The Game Awards, may have potentially spoiled the winner of this year’s Game of the Year award. Leaked emails between Rockstar, the developer of Grand Theft Auto 6, and Keighley suggest that he’s planning to give Game of the Year to a game that won’t even be released until next year. Strangely enough, many of these insider emails were leaked on homestarunner.com for some reason.
In early August, Geoff received an email with the subject line: "Psst, hey kid, wanna make a bajillion dollars?" from Rockstar. Keighley responded quickly with nothing but, “Yes daddy 🤤.”
GTA has long been considered one of the greatest media products in the world, with total sales outclassing all of the toque sales in Canada and Finland combined. For the longest time, it seemed like Rockstar wouldn’t even need to make another GTA, as their latest entry keeps selling. I guess every day, new boys turn 11 and want to walk into a virtual strip club and beat up minorities. Rockstar may be worried they’re losing some of that momentum though, as they’re apparently willing to pay Geoff to make their game Game of the Year before it even comes out.
In an email to Rockstar, Geoff said that he could make the award seem legitimate if he used the phrase “It is so good it transcends space and time.” He went on to add that if they continued to pay him, he "would be fine giving them the Game of the Year award every year. People don’t really care when I give out an award; they really only show up for the new trailers and the always hilarious Muppet act I put on."
The emails stopped there, so it’s unclear if this plan will actually come to fruition. Rockstar must be desperate to pull a stunt like this. While many people love GTA, surely someone will notice if a game that isn’t even out yet wins Game of the Year, especially when we have had great games like Concord come out this year.
We reached out to Geoff for comment, and he said, “The Game Awards is all about transparency and honesty. So a bought winner would never happen.” He ended by noting that if it did happen, he knows a special friend named “Keoff Geighly” who would happily start another Game Awards if this one was somehow canceled due to shady practices.
